Medical Explanatory Models of Illness and Health

Medical explanatory models are our social and cultural beliefs around illness and health. While this can have interesting (and questionable) applications. Like your grandmother telling you, you’ll catch a cold if you don’t wear a hat in the winter. Explanatory models have become an important aspect of Arthur Kleinman’s theory on illness narratives. Which includes…

Can We Eradicate Human Disease?

An entire class full of conversations on if we can Eradicate Human Disease? I couldn’t wait to sign up for this class. This paper is an opinion piece on why I don’t believe we can eradicate human disease. While this class was not in anthropology, my lens takes a wide look at the history of…

The Revolutionary Aspects of Practice Theory in Anthropology

Practice Theory caught my interest because I’m fascinated by the things that influence beliefs and behavior. And how we come to know what we know. I’m really interested in how we accept new information into our worldview. And the cultural systems that support, reject or slow down that flow of knowledge. Fall Semester, 2021 (7…

Atlanta History Within the Garden and Graves of Oakland Cemetery

Beyond the Book: My Worldview as a Reader

When I think of my childhood, I think of my mother reading to us. This essay is a reflection of how important being a reader is to me. How the stories I read as a child continue to influence and inspire and sometimes even challenge me. I studied film at SCAD, but it was this…

Hello!

I'm Tami Lynn Ross. I created Observing Participant as a place to share my writing after going back to school to finish my Anthropology degree (an adventure that took 26 years!), as well as my journey as a caregiver for my MIL (who has dementia) while also caring for my daughter as she navigates her own chronic illnesses.

As the mom of a zebra/spoonie I have been observing & participating in the healthcare system in America for some time, and it is an eye opening (often frustrating) experience that informs my interests (read questions) and inspires my advocacy.

I try to question my own bias and think critically (thank you Anthropology training) which means OP represents thoughts, ideas, and opinions I have formed through literature reviews, interviews, school projects, and personal experience.

I also support and fully value the lessons of our lives, and work with families to document their stories via workshops and one on one guidance. You can find more information about that here.
